A Janmotsav Puja (Vedic Birthday Ceremony) is a traditional Hindu ritual performed on an individual's birth anniversary (calculated via the lunar calendar or Tithi). Rather than just a celebration, it is approached as a spiritual milestone to express gratitude for the gift of life, cleanse past karmas, neutralize negative planetary influences, and invoke divine blessings for longevity, health, and prosperity.
Key Rituals of Janmotsav Puja
1. Sankalpa (Sacred Resolve): The individual (or parents) holds water, flowers, and rice grains in the right hand. They declare their name, Gotra (lineage), time/place of birth, and intention to seek longevity and good health.
2. Devata Avahana (Invoking Deities)
* Ganesh Puja: Lord Ganesha is worshiped first to remove any obstacles (Vighna) during the ceremony and in the coming year.
* Navagraha Puja: Worship of the nine planets to balance cosmic energies and reduce any Doshas (malefic alignments) in the individual's birth chart.
* Ashta Chiranjeevi Puja: Prayers are offered to the eight immortal figures of Hindu tradition (Ashwatthama, Bali, Vyasa, Hanuman, Vibhishana, Kripacharya, Parashurama, and Markandeya) to bless the individual with longevity.
3. Hawan (The Fire Ritual)
* A central part of the Janmotsav is the Havan (sacred fire ritual). Offerings of ghee, herbs, and other samagri are made into the fire to invoke Aayur Devata (the deity of life and age).
4. Conclusion of the Puja
The ritual concludes with Maha Aarti, where a lit lamp is waved before the deity and the individual. Prasad (blessed food) is offered to all attendees, and the individual bows down to seek the blessings of parents, elders, and the presiding priests for a successful, healthy year ahead.
